The Car d'Lane show downtown on Father's Day will be accompanied by a smaller show, plus a swap meet and other events in Hayden the same weekend.

Alternate car show, music and food will be offered in Hayden

COEUR d'ALENE -- It was off, now it's on again. And then some.

The automotive swap meet usually held at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds in conjunction with Car d'Lane was canceled this year, but it's back.

Calling it "The lil ol' auto swap meet that refuses to die," Clint Cord and Merry Noordam, owners of Showcase Auction Center in Hayden, performed a last minute "adoption" of the abandoned project by giving it a new home plus an expanded, fresh new theme to attract new vendor enthusiasm and broader public interest.

Newly expanded from a one-day automotive oriented swap meet, the new three-day swap meet will officially open at noon Friday. After the downtown Car d'Lane parade, the public is invited to enjoy five decades of top hits played live by local Post Falls favorites, Smoke Waggin. Music starts at 8 p.m. and "ends when the crowd can't take any more fun," Cord said.

He said the event will provide an alternate site for people who don't want to go downtown, or who want to take in another set of activities and see even more cars.

Cord said after hearing of "one dead and gone swap meet," he decided on an 11th-hour rescue, then expanded it to what he now calls "Cars Bikes 'n Chili Gone Wild."

At 9 a.m. Saturday the swap meet opens and registrations for the event's car show begins. It will include people's choice awards for best rat rods, classic and custom cars plus classic and custom motorcycles. At 4 p.m., cash and prize awards up to $300 will be awarded to the top place winners in each category voted on by the public.

On Sunday, when Car d'Lane is just a memory, the swap meet starts at 9 a.m., along with registration for a chili cookoff and salsa tasting contest. People's choice awards and regional celebrity judges awards with up to $300 in cash and prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m.

Hoping for the largest event of it's kind to date, the event producers are encouraging vendors to take advantage of the three full days for $30 for a 10- by 10-foot space promotion. A $20 entry fee per car, motorcycle and/or chili/salsa contestant can win up to $300 in cash.

Daily admission is $3, or $5 for all three days, and parking is $1.

The Showcase Auction Center is at 12551 N. Government Way.

" This comment is directed to Tim. You might want to consider Treasure Towne in Post Falls. It's located next to McDonalds - Off Exit 2 in Post Falls. Its a year round INDOOR multi vendor marketplace. There is room for 32 vendor booths inside and when they do their outdoor event once a month (weather permitting) there is room for another 24 vendors. Prices are very reasonable - For one weekend (thats fri/sat/sun) and 8 x 10 space is only $40.00 and a 10 x 10 space runs $50.00. Now here's the best part. You prepay for 3 back to back weekends as a new vendor and you get the 4th weekend FREE. Do it again the following month, and the 4th weekend is only $10.00.
I agree that most flea/swap meet prices are somewhat over what most folks will pay. They seem to be sold out most weekends. Or ~ give them a call at 208-777-8080. Good luck. "

" Ummm...they're rolling pieces of art and automotive history, not daily commuters. Get back in your Prius and move along. Nothing for you to see here. "

" Most of these "archaic machines" as you like to call them, get the same or better mileage than a brand new car.

You apparently don't know what you are talking about so why do you post?

The average MPG has not improved since the Model T. Actually went down for most of the history since its inception. "

" Given that gas is at $4/gal and climbing, isn't it time to retire these archaic machines in favor of something just a wee bit more efficient? "

" I have been a vendor at the previous swap meet at the Fairgrounds for at least the last 6 years. Two spaces, 10' by 20' cost $30 each. It started out as a 2 day event and then became a one day event which was not profitable for most vendors. I have always felt this event should be on a different date than the Car D'Alene which detracts from the swap meet. At least with the one at the fairgrounds a free shuttle was provided to and from the Car D' Alene and the Swap Meet.

The Early Ford V-8 Club Swap Meet, which is the best and oldest one in the Inland Northwest is in July at the Spokane Fairgrounds. Those outdoor spaces are $40 for 10' by 20' space, where you can at least park a trailer in. At this new swap meet rate I would have to pay $120 for 4 spaces.

I will come and check it out but will not be a vendor. I wish the proprietors good luck but we need a more reasonably priced local swap meet.
